In the summer of 1912, Spencer Frederick Gore stayed in the new town of Letchworth Garden City. Here he completed some of his career’s more avant-garde landscapes paintings, using stylised forms and vivid colours. The Icknield Way is an ancient trackway that goes from Norfolk to Wiltshire. It proceeds along the escarpment, including Berkshire Downs and Chiltern Hills. The paintings by Gore assimilated hallmarks of his experiences in France during his visits to the exhibition by both Gauguin and Cezanne; we see the influence of their use of intense, vibrant colours and thick paints and their emphasis on geometric and sometimes distorted forms. With its rich, bold colours reflected both in the sky and the receding fields, this is very much amongst the Best of Gore’s work.
