The background behind the sculpture of John Jorrock, a fictional character created by writer Robert Smith Surtees (1805-1864), was commissioned by the development company Waites Construction in 1982.
Waites Construction was involved in pursuing their policy by commissioning a sculpture for one of their significant sites. Paul Waite particularly liked R S Surtees' writing, taken by the notion of the 'Surrey subscription hounds gathering for their hunt at Croydon and the chaotic ride that John Jorrocks made from Covent Garden to join the sport of hunt.
The sculpture evolved from joint discussions between Paul Wates and John W. Mills to complete a large bronze equestrian piece to capture the humour & character in the storytelling, cast at the Meridian Foundry in Peckham.
John W. Mills's other references to significant public sculptures are the "Blitz", National Fire Fighters Monument (St Paul's Cathedral) and the Women of World War II (in the middle of Whitehall).
